The North Mountain Cultural and Recreation Association invites you to hike across North Mountain from Valley Mills to the churches in Marble Mountain on August 12th, 2017.  If you haven’t experienced 15 new places in the Bras d’Or Lakes Biosphere, during Canada’s 150 Birthday, this is a place to start!

We’ll be walking on the Old Mountain Road (Pioneer highway).  From start to finish it is about 6.5 kms in length.  The northern half of the route follows the old trail beside a mountain stream, through a wonderful “Old Hemlock Forest”.   There is ample opportunity on this trail to learn about trees, ferns and lichens!  The trail is partially washed out in a few spots and can be muddy in a few areas if it has been wet.  So please wear proper footwear with good support. At the top, the trail meets a forestry road which we will follow southeast to Marble Mountain.  This section offers easy walking with a few lessons in forest succession, geology and wetlands.  Expect spectacular views as we walk down the mountain.

We are promoting this hike to determine if it could morph into a portion of the “Walking Around the Bras d’Or” project initiated by the Bras d’Or Lake Biosphere Reserve Association.  This hike, along with other shorter hikes in our area, has the potential to complement our already established Water Access Point for the Trans Canada Trail. Arrive at 9:30 and park in Marble Mt.  There will be transportation to the trail head at Valley Mills.  You’ll be walking back to your vehicles!

Please bring water and your lunch and/or snacks, but remember you’ll have a more enjoyable experience if you aren’t carrying too much. Don’t forget your camera – lots to photograph. This hike is designed as a slow informative walk – not a quick walk for cardiovascular improvement, although you will achieve more than your daily 10,000 step requirement!

The Mountain Road Trail is not maintained at this time.  Please carry out what you bring in, respect landowner’s property and know you are on the trail at your own risk.  Have fun!
